24 collages with transfer lettering on paper
14,2 x 20.2 cm – 5.6″ x 8″ made with photos from the book of found photos Beautiful Strangers by Lydia Fairy, with kind permission
The first two collages exhibited in the group exhibition Cut The Crab, August 23 – Sept 30 2023 at Helsinki Urban Art in Finland
This series started as an experiment. I usually cut out people and save the leftovers for whenever I might need them. When I needed a change I started working in my sketchbook and used the leftovers of other collages and had so much fun! Pretty quickly I noticed my natural tendency to observe and comment on how people behave, talk and think started to surface in these collages. The collages show moments in every day life. Interaction between people, a thought that occured or a situation that needed a comment all found their way into my work. Lifted from the sketch book, the moments get the attention they deserve. They are fleeting, life goes fast, what seemed precious one minute is forgotten the next. A tangible memory brings us back to that precious moment in human nature.

Handmade collaged artist book, 20 pages of 40 (unfinished)
paper transfer lettering, red vellum, red thread, pencil marks
15 x 20,7 cm
5.9″ x 8.1″
Made for an open call by The Doug and Laurie Kanyer Art Collection
The theme for the open call was Finding Love and Transformation in a book of collage. Themes to pick from were: healing, love and transformation.
The most love, transformation and healing I found was in becoming a mother (and years later a grandmother). This artist’s book is about that incredible journey. The substrate is a Dutch children’s book. I added pages from a (translated to) Dutch book about raising children; parts of pages from a vintage accounting book; kids, mothers, fathers, grandparents from 50s and 60s magazines; saved cut offs; transfer lettering; red vellum; marks made holding the end of my son’s first pencil with which he learned to write and left his marks everywhere, so why not pretend in my book. All pages are connected to each other with red woollen thread, some threads were torn and tied again, some have loose ends, some have tension, some are loose, some may break, just like the ties in life.
